It is possible to employ traditional machining methods used for iron-based alloys. This alloy possesses increased strength and a "gumminess" that is not typical of steels, and it work-hardens during machining. Heavy-duty machining equipment and tools should be employed to reduce chatter or work-hardening of the alloy prior to cutting. This alloy is easily produced using all standard techniques and has high flexibility.
The alloy must be formed using stronger machinery since it is stronger than standard steel. Heat treatment does not strengthen or harden the alloy. The recommended temperature range for forging is 2250 F to 1900 F. The alloy is prone to thermal cracking in the field between 1400°F and 1000°F, and hot operations between 2250°F and 1600°F should be avoided. Standard tooling can be used for cold forming, although simple carbon tool steels are not advised since they have a tendency to gall.
